The Story
Picture this: A 9 or 10-ish-year-old girl saw her first ever small cookbook of local Ghanaian dishes and fell in love with it. She hadn't seen half of the ingredients in that cookbook before in her life up until that moment and her curiosity spiked.
Later on, her mom would purchase the first blender for their home and she would try a pineapple and mango smoothie- which failed horribly; don't ask how anyone can ruin a smoothie, she was just a child! -from the cookbook. And yes you guessed right, her subsequent attempts to recreate recipes like coconut rice and Chinese spaghetti failed too.
Yup, you guessed right. That child is me. Hey there, I'm Jae. I have always had a deep passion for food and wellness and this passion has only intensified with time. Growing up, I watched lots of recipes on numerous cooking channels and desired greatly to learn how to make those sumptuous meals so that I too could teach others.
Fast forward to my forced gap year before my first year in university, I learned the art of food blogging. After procrastinating for months, I picked up my filming equipment and took my first food photograph. I still remember the first juice recipe I filmed, the watermelon juice recipe. It wasn't great, but the joy I felt was beyond measure! And yes, I got better as I continued filming recipes to post on my social media pages.
Then I started university and began to think seriously about my passion for food. At the time, I just wanted to make mouthwatering, quick, and low-cost recipes because student life was happening to me and I couldn't let poor nutrition add to that. But surprisingly, I didn't find any blog or channel dedicated to student food.
Point of correction, the very few social media pages I found that created content around student food were foreign accounts so I couldn't relate to their content as they used ingredients I wasn't familiar with.
At that moment, a switch turned on in my head. If I could not find any relatable social media pages and blogs to teach me how to make the kind of meals I wanted, then I was going to start one. And so I rebranded my old accounts to Foodishjae so I could document the low-cost, mouthwatering, and quick meals I make in school and teach other interested students as well.
Foodishjae is primarily for students, but it's open to anyone who just wants to make mouthwatering meals on a budget.
Bringing It Together
While I focus on food, I'm also quite passionate about wellness. I believe in holistic health and so I bring together my love for food and wellness by creating content about wellness education for students, young adults, and literally people from all walks of life as my way of contributing towards SDG 3.
Fun fact about me
1. I am a bibliophile. Lock me in a room with a good book and tasty food and I would be in heaven on earth! Just don't forget to give me the key before leaving lol!
2. I've always wondered why God just didn't let me come into this world as a food prodigy, complete with dope inborn cooking skills and all that jazz but guess what? It didn't happen that way. I've come to learn that cooking is a skill, the more I learn, the more better at it I become.
